Year 6 Trip

21st May 2015

Dressed in our 1939 outfits complete with gas mask boxes and labels, the Year 6 girls and staff waved goodbye to Bowdon Prep and set off for Bury. We talked to elderly people who had experienced being evacuated and learned from them about the clothes they wore, pre-decimal money, toys and games, and strange artefacts such as flat irons, wartime recipes for prune pudding and stirrup pumps.

A ride on a steam engine took us to the village of Rawtenstall where the billeting officer allocated some of us to ‘local villages’ and told us what it would be like to be away from home in a strange place. We enjoyed our packed lunches of rolls and cheese, but we are glad that rationing is over.
