Year 2

Once pupils reach Year 2, they are encouraged to grow in confidence and independence, becoming positive role models for the younger children in Pre-Prep. At this stage, we gently increase expectations, encouraging pupils to take greater responsibility in both their daily routines and their learning.

Our experienced teaching team ensures that every child is well supported as they are challenged to aim high and achieve their personalised goals. The strong foundations laid in the earlier years prepare pupils well for the transition to a more academic curriculum in Year 3, while maintaining a nurturing and caring environment in which each child feels valued and secure.

We focus on developing strong core skills alongside curious, enquiring minds. Children are fully engaged in honing their abilities across a range of subjects, with mathematics, reading and writing remaining at the heart of the curriculum. Alongside this, pupils enjoy a rich and stimulating programme of topic-based learning, exploring exciting themes such as Ancient Egypt, the Stone Age and the Vikings.

In Year 2, pupils continue to benefit from specialist teaching in subjects including PE, French, drama and music. The partnership between parents and teachers is particularly important at this stage, with close collaboration ensuring that each child is fully prepared for the move up to Prep.

The Year 2 team carefully supports this transition by organising Prep trainee days. These provide pupils with valuable insights into life in Prep, allowing them to meet their future teachers, experience moving between classrooms and develop greater independence. Parents are also invited into school for a dedicated transition day, where they hear from the Head and from pupils who share their own experiences of moving into Prep. Parents then visit the Year 3 classrooms, meet the Prep teachers and have the opportunity to ask questions about the curriculum and daily life.
