Year 1
By Year 1, the children are confident and settled in their surroundings, with a strong sense of how much progress they have made since starting school. We recognise that the transition from Early Years into Year 1 can feel like a significant step, and we take great care to ensure that this change is as smooth and reassuring as possible.
During the first half term, the children continue to use the Early Years playground and have access to familiar Early Years resources. This thoughtful approach allows them to maintain a sense of continuity and confidence while gradually adjusting to the expectations of Year 1.
Year 1 pupils follow a topic-based curriculum throughout the year. The six topics covered are It’s Good to Be Me, A Blast from the Past, What Lies Beneath, Treetop Explorers, A Good Read and Fly Away with Me. These engaging themes provide a broad and balanced curriculum, developing a wide range of skills and knowledge through varied teaching styles and interactive lessons. This creative approach ensures that learning remains stimulating and enjoyable, while continually capturing the children’s curiosity and enthusiasm.
The children spend the majority of their day with their class teachers, who teach the core subjects as well as most foundation subjects. In addition, subject specialist teachers deliver lessons in areas such as drama, music, French and PE, making full use of the excellent facilities available within the school.
Year 1 also marks an exciting stage of growing independence and opportunity. This is the first year that the children can join the school council, giving them a voice within the school community. They also take their first steps into exploring lunchtime and after-school clubs. Pupils can choose from two to three lunchtime clubs, as well as a wide range of after-school clubs covering interests such as Design and Technology, music and a variety of sports.
