In 1983, Bowdon Preparatory School welcomed Mrs Jane Tan as Headmistress and was based on Stamford Road, Bowdon. BPS had already earned a strong local reputation for delivering a traditional education within a close-knit, family environment. Under Mrs Tan’s leadership, pupil numbers grew steadily, and the school became well-known for its exceptional pastoral care and consistently high academic results.
In 2011, when Culcheth Hall School, a local girls’ school, announced its closure, an opportunity arose for BPS to expand. A group of parents and former staff created a charitable trust to acquire the extensive premises on Ashley Road, securing the school’s long-term future. That same year, Mrs Tan transferred Bowdon Prep to the new trust, and the school moved to its current site in September 2011.
Following Mrs Tan’s retirement, Mrs Helen Gee was appointed Head in 2013. Mrs Gee embodied the school’s ethos, encouraging pupils to aim high, challenge themselves, explore new opportunities, and pursue their passions. Her tenure strengthened the school’s commitment to nurturing each child’s individuality and valuing her unique contribution to school life.
In 2024, Mrs Sara Makepeace-Taylor became Head, bringing renewed vision and energy while maintaining the traditions and values that define Bowdon Prep. Under her leadership, the school continues to evolve, combining academic excellence with a strong sense of community, care, and ambition for every pupil.
September 2026 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the school as we opened our Big Red Door a little wider, welcoming boys into our community with the same warmth, ambition and sense of belonging that underpin all we do and inspire our school motto: Believe, Persevere, Succeed.
Bowdon Preparatory School is now home to around 250 pupils, celebrating the outstanding achievements and success of every pupil.
